New to Massage FAQ's
Typically, massage is performed with the client fully undressed covered by a sheet or towel to protect their modesty. We understand and respect every client’s comfort level, which is why we allow you to be undressed to your comfort level. Please bear in mind that some techniques may not be able to be performed through clothing (such as effleurage). State law and ethics require that the client be draped properly during a massage. However, if you are cold or are too warm, we can adjust the draping level to your needs. Normally, the only part that would be uncovered would be the body part the therapist is working on. Thai and Shiatsu massage is done wearing loose clothing and may be a good option if you’re hesitant about disrobing.

This is a complicated discussion. A good deep tissue massage can border on discomfort when an area that is particularly tight is focused on. This does not mean that it should hurt. Oftentimes, it is even enjoyable. If an area is painful when being worked on, please inform your therapist as this can be a sign of an underlying injury that your therapist needs to know about. Your therapist can always modify their technique to match your comfort level.

Absolutely not! Muscle is a tissue; and there are often several layers of muscle in the body. Deep tissue simply means that the focus of the massage is the deeper muscle in the body. A therapist doesn’t necessarily need a lot of pressure to target this deeper layer of muscle. Good technique can oftentimes be more beneficial than heavy pressure. With this in mind, your massage is all about you, so if you want more or less pressure in an area please inform your therapist.

Many times you will be sore up to 48 hours after a good deep tissue massage. This can be the result of lactic acid that is released from a newly loosened muscle during the massage. It’s similar to an intense workout in feeling. Drinking water can help to flush out the toxins that were released and help to alleviate the soreness faster.

An intake form is only required on your first visit to us so that we may be aware of any medical issues that we need to be aware of in order to provide you with the best massage possible. To see a partial list of contraindications: http://reumassage.com/contraindication-list/. If you have been a previous client and experience a new disease/illness/injury or anything else medically relevant, please fill out a new intake form so we may update our records. Also, please have your intake form filled out prior to your first appointment so that we won’t have to use any time from your appointment as we have other appointments scheduled and can’t take away from their time if your form isn’t filled out. If you choose not to fill out an intake form, then we unfortunately cannot accept your appointment.

A therapist will first meet with you to determine your massage needs. Next, the therapist will leave the room and allow you to undress to your comfort level. You will lie down on the table and cover yourself with the sheet. Typically a massage will cover: your back, fronts and backs of legs (including glutes), fronts and backs of arms, neck and head. If you need chest or stomach worked on, please inform your therapist. If any areas make you uncomfortable or you need the pressure or technique adjusted, please notify your therapist.

A full body Shiatsu treatment is delivered to a fully dressed client on a futon mat although some practitioners work on a massage table. The session often begins with gentle stretching and manipulation techniques to help stimulate the movement of energy and to relax the muscles, re-balancing the whole body before specific symptoms are dealt with. Pressure can be applied to both wide areas as well as precise points and varies according to the body’s needs. Sometimes the pressure can be gentle and calming, other times it can be deeply stimulating; it all depends on the specific needs of the individual. Shiatsu is always characterized by a deeply connecting way of touch, by the flow of the various movements and by a clear presence of the practitioner. This will help you to relax, let go and become aware of yourself and your own process and potential.
